Public Position Statement: Supporting the Schauffele Plaza Project

This position statement was drafted and adopted by the Board of Directors of the Ardwood Civic Association and the Ardmore Progressive Civic Association September 29th, 2024.

The Ardwood and Ardmore Progressive Civic Associations strongly endorse the Schauffele Plaza redesign project. We believe this initiative will significantly enhance the quality of life for Ardmore residents and visitors and have a positive impact on the local economy by creating a vibrant "town center" in the heart of our community.

Key benefits of the project include:

  • Community Identity: Schauffele Plaza will become a defining feature of Ardmore, reflecting our community's values and character. It’s design and use can showcase local art, history, and culture, strengthening our sense of place and civic pride.

  • Community Connection: Schauffele Plaza will serve as a central gathering place, fostering a stronger sense of community and belonging among residents.

  • Event Venue: It will provide a dedicated space for community events, celebrations, and cultural activities.

  • Economic Growth: The creation of this public space is expected to stimulate local economic development by attracting new businesses to the area, increasing foot traffic for existing local businesses, enhancing Ardmore's appeal as a tourist destination.

  • Green Space: As a public park, it will provide much-needed green space to our urban environment, contributing to the overall well-being of residents.

  • Recreational Opportunities: The plaza can offer space for recreational uses from yoga and sunbathing to quiet spots for relaxation, it will cater to diverse interests and needs within our community.

  • Multigenerational Appeal: Designed with all age groups in mind, the plaza will feature amenities that attract children, youth, adults, and seniors alike. This inclusivity will foster intergenerational interaction and strengthen community bonds across age divides.

  • Health and Wellness: By providing a space for physical activity, social interaction, and connection with nature, Schauffele Plaza will contribute significantly to the physical and mental well-being of Lower Merion residents. It will encourage outdoor activities, reduce stress, and promote a healthier lifestyle for all.

We do understand that this project necessitates the removal of parking spaces (a reduction from 112 total spaces to 56). We are compassionate about the hardship this may cause some individuals and acknowledge the challenges this change will present. However, we believe these adjustments are manageable given the broader context. Ample parking is conveniently located just one block away at One Ardmore’s garage (200 parking spots), which should adequately meet the needs of residents and visitors alike. We believe this nearby alternative, combined with the project's overall benefits to our community, outweighs the impact of the removed spaces.

We firmly believe that the Schauffele Plaza project represents a valuable investment in Ardmore's future. By creating this central public space, we are not only improving our community today but also laying the groundwork for a more vibrant, connected, and prosperous Ardmore for generations to come.

We urge all stakeholders to support this initiative and work together to make the Schauffele Plaza a reality for our community.
